I'm hooked on Ruth Reichl new column! Each week she shares tricks and tips on how to make our favourite meals even more irresistible. Pretty cool, isn't it? And guess what, the other week she wrote about her take on the warm, gooey and perfect-for-lazy-evenings: grilled cheese sandwich. Bingo! So, here are Ruth's three little tricks that tickled my fancy immediately and hopefully will make us all enjoy our chees-y goodness even more:
*Always use butter (spreading it inside and outside of the bread) but never margarine.
*Spread grated (good quality) cheese rather than sliced for quicker and more even melting.
*And my favourite one: add a gentle swipe of mustard (or horseradish) to the inside of the bread for that extra layer of flavour.
Mmm...everything tastes so much better with mustard, especially
P.S: How funny that tiny little changes can make such a big difference in taste.
P.P.S: Also, here are three other sandwiches I love, including the funny (and a bit gross) tricky one.

Diana, this is great. We eat grilled cheese sandwiches at least twice each week and I can not wait to try it this way. Cheers, Grace
I always use mustard. My favourite is Norwegian grained sweet mustard ;) Mmmm! I got hungry now! A slice of ham is also good along with the mustard and cheese :)
Hope your day is great!

Is there anything better in this life?

Not hard to get hooked on. NAM!!!
umm YUM!
Oh this sounds divine! We have been enjoying grilled cheese sandwiches lately. I'm going to have to try these tips. TOTALLY makes sense to use grated cheese. That's always one of my biggest frustrations with sliced cheese. It takes forever to melt and sometimes isn't fully melted. And the mustard idea? BRILLIANT! I can't wait to try this.
Thanks, Diana. Have a lovely day!

Best grilled cheese sandwich at the Sacred Wheel in Oakland, CA. My husband makes these gruyere cheese sandwiches follows all above rules except the shredded part. Will have to share that tip! Xo

Ooh, I always do butter on the outside of the bread, but I've never used it on the inside. I'll have to try that next time.
My personal favorite for grilled cheese is provolone with tomato slices and fresh basil. It's pretty much the most delicious thing ever.
