Anxiety Fix

Monday, April 3, 2017

I don't think I'm going out on a limb here, when I say that most of us, one way or another, experience anxiety... Right? As my mom often says is: 'It’s not us that changed, it’s the world, and our brain just can’t quite cope anymore'.

So, I recently read that anxiety confuses our thinking because 'often the most profound thoughts we need to grapple with have a potentially disturbing character', and since the anxious bit of the brain is a mono-tasker, those 'stuff' in our head trigger an alarm. But when that occurs, instead of feeding the beast by over-thinking every little aspect of that particular thought, calm it down by jumping into a shower.

Yup, it's that simple, because when we have a shower...'the mind is no longer on guard. We’re not supposed to be doing much inside our heads, we’re mainly occupied with trying to soap our backs and properly rinse our hair. The ideas that have been half-forming at the back of our minds, ideas about what the true purpose of our lives might be and what we should do next, keep up their steady inward pressure…There is a lot less to stop them reaching full consciousness. We’re not meant to be thinking and so - at last - we can think freely and courageously.'

The bottom line is that because of the calming nature of showering, our mono-tasking anxious brain is distracted, and clear thoughts can stream through, giving us the feeling of ease...

So, next time you're feeling anxious, take a hot shower. It really works:)

P.S: Travel as therapy.
P.P.S: Fancy more?

anxiety is a constant conversion topic in my home. our son is about to graduate collage and he is really feeling the pressure of what is about to happen. i always tell him to not give in, to just let his true nature come forward and everything will be fine that way. ill pass on the shower tip onto him.
